Singing is in the Franco-Sicilian tenor Roberto Alagna\u2019s blood. His illustrious maternal great-grandfather Jimmy sang for the great Enrico Caruso when the the maestro happened to drop by one day in his wallet shop in New York City, U.S.A., and Enrico was so impressed that he suggested Jimmy audition for the Metropolitan Opera Chorus! What a complement! (although Jimmy declined the suggestion\u00a0 of the maestro\u2014or the \u201cCommendatore\u201d, \u201cthe Commander\u201d as Jimmy endearingly liked to call him\u2014as he preferred to focus on his business.) [2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>

Roberto \u2019s vocal mentor Rafael Ruiz, was a direct student of\u00a0 the legendary Italian tenor Aureliano Pertile (1885-1952). It was that fact that caught the attention of Luciano Pavarotti when Roberto met him at an LP signing event at the Printemps department store in Paris. A year later, without knowing it, Roberto was invited to audition in the first round of the the Pavarotti International Voice Competition in Pesaro, Italy, the birthplace of legendary nineteenth century composer Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868). He sang his good luck song \u2018La Danza\u2019 from Rossini for Luciano and thought that he\u2019d been disqualified as Luciano didn\u2019t permit him to sing a second piece for him as did all the other participants. Au contraire, Luciano loved his voice and he was qualified to the next round.[3]<\/sup><\/a> Indeed years later, Saimir Pirgu, an Albanian tenor,\u00a0 who studied with Luciano told Roberto something he didn\u2019t know about Luciano: \u201cevery time we took lessons with Luciano, he spoke of only one tenor, Roberto, and he would say \u2018here take this LP and sing like this\u201d.[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>

After winning the Pavarotti \u00a0International Voice Competition in Philadelphia\u2014the hometown of Mario Lanza\u2014in 1988, Roberto\u2019s \u00a0career really skyrocketed.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

He made his debut with the Glyndebourne Touring Company in the role of Alfred Germont in Verdi\u2019s La Traviata<\/em>. From 1990 onwards, he has performed a series of major roles, respectively at the leading opera houses; La Scala, Covent Garden and the New York Metropolitan.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

In 1995 he won an Olivier Award for his performance of Rom\u00e9o in Gounod\u2019s Rom\u00e9o et Juliette<\/em> which was singled out for its diction and fine nuances, and was a turning point in his career giving him his place with the the greats of the French repertoire. Alagna also has sought out long neglected repertory to perform, and has from his lyric tenor beginnings has as his voice matured,\u00a0 ventured into the heavier spinto roles such as Samson in Samson et Dalia<\/em>, Canio in I Pagliacci<\/em>, Mauricio in Adriana Lecouvreur<\/em> and Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut<\/em>.<\/p>

Roberto is known for his charismatic stage presence and has obtained widespread popularity through his recording a variety of diverse music genres, not to mention, his appearances in films and music videos. His album \u2018Sicilian<\/em>\u2019 released in 2008 was a huge success and reached the popular audience with sales over 350,000.[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>

Das Singen liegt dem franz\u00f6sisch-sizilianischen Tenor Roberto Alagna im Blut. Sein ber\u00fchmter Urgro\u00dfvater m\u00fctterlicherseits, Jimmy, sang f\u00fcr den gro\u00dfen Enrico Caruso, als der Maestro eines Tages zuf\u00e4llig in seinem Brieftaschenladen in New York City, USA, vorbeischaute, und Enrico war so beeindruckt, dass er Jimmy vorschlug, f\u00fcr den Chor der Metropolitan Opera vorzusingen! Was f\u00fcr ein Kompliment! (Obwohl Jimmy den Vorschlag des Maestros \u2013 oder des \u201eCommendatore\u201c, \u201edes Kommandanten\u201c, wie Jimmy ihn liebevoll nannte \u2013 ablehnte, da er sich lieber auf sein Gesch\u00e4ft konzentrieren wollte.) <\/p>\n

Robertos Gesangsmentor Rafael Ruiz war ein direkter Sch\u00fcler des legend\u00e4ren italienischen Tenors Aureliano Pertile (1885-1952). Diese Tatsache erregte die Aufmerksamkeit von Luciano Pavarotti, als Roberto ihn bei einer Schallplattensignierstunde im Pariser Kaufhaus Printemps traf. Ein Jahr sp\u00e4ter wurde Roberto, ohne es zu wissen, zu einem Vorsingen in der ersten Runde des Internationalen Pavarotti-Gesangswettbewerbs im italienischen Pesaro eingeladen, dem Geburtsort des legend\u00e4ren Komponisten des 19. Jahrhunderts Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868). Er sang f\u00fcr Luciano sein Gl\u00fcckslied \u201eLa Danza\u201c von Rossini und dachte, er sei disqualifiziert, weil Luciano ihm nicht erlaubte, wie alle anderen Teilnehmer, ein zweites St\u00fcck f\u00fcr ihn zu singen. Im Gegenteil, Luciano war von seiner Stimme begeistert und qualifizierte sich f\u00fcr die n\u00e4chste Runde. Tats\u00e4chlich erz\u00e4hlte Saimir Pirgu, ein albanischer Tenor, der bei Luciano studierte, Roberto Jahre sp\u00e4ter etwas, das er nicht \u00fcber Luciano wusste: \u201eJedes Mal, wenn wir bei Luciano Unterricht hatten, sprach er nur von einem Tenor, Roberto, und er sagte: \u201aHier, nimm diese LP und sing so.\u2018\u201c <\/p>\n

Nach dem Gewinn des Pavarotti International Voice Competition 1988 in Philadelphia \u2013 der Heimatstadt von Mario Lanza \u2013 erlebte Robertos Karriere einen steilen Aufstieg. <\/p>\n
