That is to say: the very highest, the Ds and E flats, the E natural that would stop the show at the end of <\/span><span dir=\"RTL\" lang=\"AR-SA\">\u2018<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Caro nome<\/span><span dir=\"RTL\" lang=\"AR-SA\">\u2019<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, the Fs which because of the keys used would elevate the final utterance of Lucia,\u2019 wrote J.B.Stearne about the \u2018X-factor\u2019 of Lily Pons.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"applewebdata:\/\/299D1F08-E4D8-4894-B767-5E36D3E76B84#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\"><sup><span lang=\"EN-US\">[1]<\/span><\/sup><\/a><br><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The extraordinary career of coloratura soprano Lily Pons seems graced by good fortune. Born to parents of French-Italian extraction on the 12 April 1898 in Draguignan near Cannes, she was a piano student at the Paris Conservatoire from the age of 13.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"applewebdata:\/\/299D1F08-E4D8-4894-B767-5E36D3E76B84#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\"><sup><span lang=\"EN-US\">[2]<\/span><\/sup><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\"> As a budding pianist, she carried off first prize in a contest at the tender age of 15, against older competitors. Nevertheless when a friend heard her sing she was persuaded to approach a famous singing teacher, Alberti de Gorostigiaga who recognised her enormous potential.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"applewebdata:\/\/299D1F08-E4D8-4894-B767-5E36D3E76B84#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\"><sup><span lang=\"EN-US\">[3]<\/span><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In 1928 &#8211; aged 30 &#8211; she made her operatic debut in Mulhouse in the title role of <i>Lakm<\/i><\/span><i><span lang=\"FR\">\u00e9<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\">, which would remain one of the staples of her repertoire. She sang the <\/span><i><span lang=\"DA\">Bell Song<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\">from <\/span><span dir=\"RTL\" lang=\"AR-SA\">\u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Lakm\u00e9\u201d and several other things, and we engaged her for the following season.\u2019 Pons was in luck as Galli-Curci had left the Met the previous season and there was no coloratura soprano. Gatti-Casazza was well aware of the treasure that had been unearthed. Again in his own words, \u2018I had given strict orders to the company that no word was to be uttered about her. I wanted her to make her debut without r<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">\u00e9<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">klame and permit the public and the critics to judge from their own reactions, without preconceived prejudices, whatever they might be\u2026. The thing was done and it was not altogether to her advantage.
