Galli Curci was born in Milan, Italy into an upper middle class family of Italo-Spanish heritage. Her musical prowess was evident at an early age graduating from the Milan Conservatorium and winning the first prize as a pianist in 1903.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We have the opera composer Piero Mascagni to thank for encouraging her to have some vocal lessons with Carignani and Sara Dufes, but apparently she remained mainly self taught as she began her career using piano exercises and treatises available from the former greats to hone her vocal skills.[1]<\/sup><\/a> Later in New York she coached with coloratura soprano Estelle Liebling.[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

She debuted as Gilda in Verdi\u2019s Rigoletto <\/em>at the age of 24 and became increasingly more successful over the next eight years in the coloratura repertoire not only in Italy but in Spain,  Egypt, Russia and Central and South America. During this time in Buenos Aires she sang two performances of Lucia di Lammermoor with Enrico Caruso.<\/p>\n

Having only been offered a contract for minor roles at La Scala in Milan, she vowed never to sing there in the future. Looking for more opportunities he sights were set across the Atlantic. She married the aristocrat Marchese Luigi Curci an aspiring painter architect, costume and set designer and they became the toast of Italian society.<\/p>\n

In New York, Galli-Curci hoped to be engaged by the Metropolitan Opera, but Maestro Gatti-Cassazza had already hired his wife, Maria Barrientos, to sing all the coloratura soprano roles that season. Fortunately, Cleofonte Campanini, of the struggling Chicago Opera, was in town looking for singers and was willing to give the diva a chance. Against Luigi\u2019s (her husband) wishes, the Curci family packed their bags and moved to Chicago.[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Her much-anticipated Met debut in the same opera was slated for Opening Night, November 14, 1921, alongside two fellow Italians, tenor Beniamino Gigli, who inherited much of Caruso\u2019s lyric repertory, and baritone Giuseppe De Luca. The new production, designed by Joseph Urban and conducted by Roberto Moranzoni, did not disappoint. Max Smith reviewing for the Herald American wrote:<\/p>\n

\u201cHow fascinating is Amelita\u2019s impersonation of Violetta, already made familiar during her association with the visiting Chicago Opera Company! How imaginatively vivacious in the first act; how pathetic in the second; how tragic in the last. It was fitting, indeed, that Giulio Gatti-Casazza should bring forward his latest \u201cstar\u201d in Traviata. For surely no other role reveals her own peculiar powers, histrionic as well as vocal, to greater advantage: None permits her to disclose more affectingly the characteristic delicacy of her art, the essentially feminine charm of her persuasions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Comparisons with the greatest coloraturas of the recent past\u2014Adelina Patti, Marcella Sembrich, Luisa Tetrazzini\u2014followed in the press, proving that even for those who found faults with the new diva, she had clearly joined an illustrious line of bel canto virtuosos. In addition to her appearances in opera and numerous recital tours, Galli-Curci\u2019s fame rested equally on her best-selling recordings. Sales for her records rivalled those of Caruso, and she often recorded popular or light songs as well as opera arias. Her distinctive vocal timbre\u2014soft-grained, velvety, and pure\u2014transferred well to records even by the crude technology of the time.\u201d[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Her fame and popularity spread. 1918 was a pivotal year in Galli-Curci\u2019s development as an international star. In addition to being followed by paparazzi (which she adored), Amelita became a celebrity endorser for RCA Victor\u2019s \u201cTalking Machines,\u201d appearing in full-page ads in the New York Times in glamorous outfits throughout 1918 and 1919. She also extolled the virtues of cosmetics, furs, and automobiles.<\/p>\n

After the Armistice in 1918, Luigi begged Amelita to return to Italy to save their marriage, but Amelita refused to give up stardom and her affair with Homer Samuels, her rehearsal accompanist in Chicago.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

 Luigi demanded a divorce, and a public scandal ensued, appearing in the society pages of Chicago papers for almost a year.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Amelita Galli-Curci and Homer Samuels were married in Homer\u2019s parents\u2019 home in Minneapolis on Jan. 15, 1921, and Amelita became an American citizen. She never returned to Italy.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The couple bought a country home in the Catskill Mountains in Upstate New York. They called their getaway \u201cSul Monte\u201d and escaped the stress of Galli-Curci\u2019s career whenever possible.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The rigours of being in such demand and popularity in both two major opera houses Chicago and New York started to tell in her voice, and in 1935 after refusing to acknowledge an ever increasing growth in her neck and the subsequent pain it caused her, she agreed to have the goitre caused by thyroid disjunction removed by a doctor who was not perturbed by operating on such a famous golden throat. On the contrary he apparently bathed in the glory and many photo opportunities were made with his famous patient. However, the operation was not without consequences, and she was never able to move into the lyric and dramatic soprano repertoire that the doctor had led her to believe would be awaiting her after she healed. The dubious honour of having the damaged nerve, the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve named after her ensued, and is still referred to as the \u201cnerve of Galli Curci\u201d up until this  day.<\/p>\n

In their retirement years Galli Curci and her husband Homer became interested in Eastern spirituality and were active members of the Yogananda Society. Galli Curci wrote the forward to Paramahansa Yogananda’s 1929 book Whispers from Eternity<\/em>. Yogananda\u2019s most famous book being Autobiography of a Yogi, <\/em>a work known to have inspired many people worldwide, including George Harrison and Apple founder Steve Jobs.<\/p>\n

In a video recording Joan Sutherland recounts how she and her husband Richard Bonynge were very excited to have the opportunity to meet their vocal heroine, and apart from exchanging Coloratura talk, she reminisced on how she was very taken by the style and presence of the diva when she opened the door to greet them completely dressed in matching pink apart from a tortoise shell comb in her hair. Sutherland lovingly ordered pink note paper in her honour which always made her remember her.[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

She was also appreciated and honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.<\/p>\n

Galli Curci died eight days after her 81st birthday at her home in California.<\/p>\n

November 1921 vorgesehen, zusammen mit zwei italienischen Landsleuten, dem Tenor Beniamino Gigli, der einen Gro\u00dfteil von Carusos lyrischem Repertoire erbte, und dem Bariton Giuseppe De Luca. Die neue Produktion, die von Joseph Urban entworfen und von Roberto Moranzoni dirigiert wurde, entt\u00e4uschte nicht. Max Smith schrieb in seiner Kritik f\u00fcr den Herald American:
\n\u201eWie faszinierend ist Amelitas Verk\u00f6rperung der Violetta, die sie bereits w\u00e4hrend ihrer Zusammenarbeit mit der Chicago Opera Company kennengelernt hat! Wie fantasievoll lebhaft im ersten Akt, wie ergreifend im zweiten, wie tragisch im letzten. \nIn der Presse folgten Vergleiche mit den gr\u00f6\u00dften Koloraturs\u00e4ngerinnen der j\u00fcngeren Vergangenheit \u2013 Adelina Patti, Marcella Sembrich, Luisa Tetrazzini \u2013, die bewiesen, dass selbst diejenigen, die an der neuen Diva etwas auszusetzen hatten, sie eindeutig in eine illustre Linie von Belcanto-Virtuosen aufgenommen hatten. Neben ihren Auftritten in der Oper und zahlreichen Konzerttourneen beruhte Galli-Curcis Ruhm gleicherma\u00dfen auf ihren meistverkauften Aufnahmen. Die Verkaufszahlen ihrer Platten konkurrierten mit denen von Caruso, und sie nahm oft popul\u00e4re oder leichte Lieder sowie Opernarien auf. Ihr unverwechselbares Stimmtimbre \u2013 weichk\u00f6rnig, samtig und rein \u2013 lie\u00df sich selbst mit der primitiven Technologie der Zeit gut auf Schallplatten \u00fcbertragen.\u201c <\/p>\n

Ihr Ruhm und ihre Popularit\u00e4t wuchsen. 1918 war ein entscheidendes Jahr f\u00fcr Galli-Curcis Entwicklung zum internationalen Star. Amelita wurde nicht nur von Paparazzi verfolgt (die sie verehrte), sondern wurde auch eine prominente Werbetr\u00e4gerin f\u00fcr RCA Victors \u201eTalking Machines\u201c und erschien 1918 und 1919 in glamour\u00f6sen Outfits in ganzseitigen Anzeigen in der New York Times. Nach dem Waffenstillstand im Jahr 1918 flehte Luigi Amelita an, nach Italien zur\u00fcckzukehren, um ihre Ehe zu retten, doch Amelita weigerte sich, ihren Ruhm und ihre Aff\u00e4re mit Homer Samuels, ihrem Probenbegleiter in Chicago, aufzugeben.<\/p>\n

Amelita Galli-Curci und Homer Samuels heirateten am 15. Januar 1921 im Haus von Homers Eltern in Minneapolis und Amelita wurde amerikanische Staatsb\u00fcrgerin. Sie kehrte nie nach Italien zur\u00fcck.<\/p>\n

Die Strapazen, die mit der Nachfrage und Popularit\u00e4t in den beiden gro\u00dfen Opernh\u00e4usern Chicago und New York verbunden waren, machten sich in ihrer Stimme bemerkbar. 1935 weigerte sie sich, ein immer st\u00e4rker werdendes Geschw\u00fcr in ihrem Nacken und die damit verbundenen Schmerzen anzuerkennen. Sie willigte ein, den durch eine Schilddr\u00fcsendisjunktion entstandenen Kropf von einem Arzt entfernen zu lassen, der sich nicht daran st\u00f6rte, an einer so ber\u00fchmten goldenen Kehle zu operieren. Im Gegenteil, er sonnte sich offenbar im Ruhm, und es ergaben sich viele Fotogelegenheiten mit seiner ber\u00fchmten Patientin. Die Operation blieb jedoch nicht ohne Folgen, und sie konnte nie mehr das lyrische und dramatische Sopranrepertoire erobern, das der Arzt ihr nach ihrer Genesung zugetraut hatte. Es folgte die zweifelhafte Ehre, dass der besch\u00e4digte Nerv, der \u00e4u\u00dfere Ast des Nervus laryngeus superior, nach ihr benannt wurde, und der bis heute als \u201eNerv von Galli Curci\u201c bezeichnet wird.<\/p>\n

In ihren Ruhestandsjahren interessierten sich Galli Curci und ihr Ehemann Homer f\u00fcr \u00f6stliche Spiritualit\u00e4t und waren aktive Mitglieder der Yogananda-Gesellschaft. Galli Curci schrieb das Vorwort zu Paramahansa Yoganandas Buch \u201eWhispers from Eternity\u201c aus dem Jahr 1929. Yoganandas ber\u00fchmtestes Buch ist \u201eAutobiography of a Yogi\u201c, ein Werk, das viele Menschen weltweit inspiriert hat, darunter George Harrison und Apple-Gr\u00fcnder Steve Jobs.<\/p>\n

In einer Videoaufnahme erz\u00e4hlt Joan Sutherland, wie aufgeregt sie und ihr Ehemann Richard Bonynge waren, als sie die Gelegenheit bekamen, ihre Gesangsheldin kennenzulernen. Abgesehen von einem Gespr\u00e4ch \u00fcber Koloraturen erinnerte sie sich daran, wie sehr sie vom Stil und der Pr\u00e4senz der Diva beeindruckt war, als diese die T\u00fcr \u00f6ffnete und sie begr\u00fc\u00dfte. Sie war komplett in passendem Pink gekleidet, abgesehen von einem Schildpattkamm im Haar. Sutherland bestellte liebevoll rosa Briefpapier zu ihren Ehren, das sie immer an sie denken lie\u00df. <\/p>\n

Au\u00dferdem wurde sie gew\u00fcrdigt und mit einem Stern auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame geehrt. <\/p>\n

Galli Curci starb acht Tage nach ihrem 81. Geburtstag in ihrem Haus in Kalifornien. <\/p>\n

Im Vorwort von Whispers of Eternity schrieb sie:
\n\u201eDie Anh\u00e4nger aller Religionen k\u00f6nnen aus dieser Quelle universeller Gebete trinken. Diese Anrufungen sind die Antwort auf den modernen wissenschaftlichen Geist, der Gott auf intelligente Weise sucht. Die Gebete in diesem Buch sind sehr vielf\u00e4ltig und erm\u00f6glichen es daher jedem von uns, jene Gebete auszuw\u00e4hlen, die seinen eigenen Bed\u00fcrfnissen am besten entsprechen und hilfreich sind. <\/p>\n

Meine bescheidene Bitte an die Leser ist in den folgenden Zeilen ausgedr\u00fcckt:<\/p>\n

Verpassen Sie nicht beim hastigen intellektuellen Lesen die Minen der Erkenntnis, die im Boden verborgen sind, der die Wortpflanzen in diesem Buch n\u00e4hrt. Wie der Autor uns sagt, graben Sie tief, t\u00e4glich und wiederholt, mit einer Spitzhacke aufmerksamen, ehrf\u00fcrchtigen und meditativen Studiums. Dann werden Sie das unbezahlbare Juwel der Selbstverwirklichung finden.\u201c <\/p>\n
