Coloratura soprano Luisa Tetrazzini was born on this day in 1871 in Florence. It is a lesser known fact, that she had two older sisters who were also sopranos, albeit they did not achieve her level of celebrity.[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

After initially studying with her sister Eva, who was nine year\u2019s senior to Luisa, she proceeded to have lessons with Eva\u2019s teacher, Professor Ceccherini at the Instituto Musicale of Florence.[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As is the case in so many lives of famous singers, she received her big break making her operatic debut in1890, at the age of only 19 years, by standing in for the prima donna in Meyerbeer\u2019s L\u2019Africaine<\/i> at the Teatro Paglione <\/i>in Florence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In her autobiography, My Life in Song<\/i>, she recalled that, \u201c<\/span>The pavements from the theatre to my home were lined, even at that late hour, with large numbers of people, all of whom seemed to be shouting congratulations to me.\u201d[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It was just 2 months after that she was engaged to repeat the role in Rome for the King and Queen of Italy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The tenor Giacomo Lauri Volpi described her as \u2018having a scintillating voice with a brilliant timbre and a range and agility well beyond the norm\u2026“<\/span> [4]<\/sup><\/a> Her voice has been described as possessing \u2018warm, clarinet-like beauty\u2019.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But it was claimed that her middle voice was rather thin and child like, (though reportedly it grew with maturity in warmth), this aspect of her voice did not please another tenor of renown John McCormack, who compared it to \u2018wailing like a cross infant.\u2019[6]<\/sup><\/a> Nevertheless, Tetrazzini herself had only words of praise for McCormack\u2019s \u2018God-given gift\u2019, noting generously, \u2019I found that his rich voice went so well with mine that I took him back with me to America, and he sang with me both in New York and in the other big towns when the Hammerstein company went on tour.\u2019 [7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Later it was written \u2018Tetrazzini possessed an extraordinary vocal technique that enabled her to surmount any vocal challenge with joyful ease. She had complete mastery of runs, trills, staccati and vocal ornaments of all kinds.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She established herself in Latin America and Europe where in St Petersburg she sang her favourite role in Donizetti\u2019s Lucia di Lammermoor with Enrico Caruso. This marked the beginning of a firm friendship and later even a collaboration in a book on vocal technique between the two.[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Though she was still relatively unknown to English opera audiences. But this was all about to change when the opportunity arose for her to stand in for Nellie Melba as Violetta in La Traviata at Covent Garden. She garnered twenty curtain calls and she was critically acclaimed by E.A. Baugham in the Daily News writing,\u201c<\/span>I do not think I am exaggerating when I say that Mme Tetrazzini has the voice of the century and stands out from even the great Italian singers we know…\u201d[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Her superstardom lay just around the corner when reviews compared her to her idol Adelina Patti. Patti being from the opera generation before, attended a performance and later invited her to lunch. The two sopranos became firm friends and Patti was often seen making a point of clapping loudly at Tetrazzini\u2019s performances. Likewise Tetrazzini wrote about a letter she had received from Patti, “Praise from a mixed audience is very gratifying after one has given it of her best. But, praise, and such praise, from Patti is far more than the passing pleasure of a public ovation.”[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Engagements in America ensued and recording contracts with Victor Recording Company captured her voice for posterity between 1904-1920.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

One very famous event she is known for, is her defiance against Oscar Hammerstein who held her to her contract not to sing in San Francisco. Hammerstein, was her agent whom she admired for his entrepreneurship and business acumen. She exclaimed \u2018I will sing in San Francisco if I have to sing there in the streets, for I know the streets of San Francisco are free.” With this declaration she won her legal case, and her new agent W.H. Leahy announced she would sing in the streets of San Francisco. So on a clear Christmas Eve in 1910,Tetrazzini climbed a stage platform in a sparkling white gown, surrounded by a throng of an estimated two to three hundred thousand San Franciscans, and serenaded the city she loved.[11]<\/sup><\/a> [12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As well as this early taster of coming mega-star\u2019s open air benefit performances, she has also been remembered in the culinary world. Whether it be called Turkey or Chicken Tetrazzini, the dish has worked its way into the ubiquitous list of food favourites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After the First World War she mainly devoted her work to concerts and recitals. Tetrazzini was married three times and was embroiled in legal battles with her third husband which diminished her enormous wealth.\u00a0 Nevertheless, she was well known for her generosity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In her retirement she taught in both Rome and Milan and her vocal technique, was apparently stunning and remained so until her end in 1940.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Luisa Tetrazzini<\/p>\n

Die Koloratursopranistin Luisa Tetrazzini wurde an diesem Tag im Jahr 1871 in Florenz geboren. Weniger bekannt ist, dass sie zwei \u00e4ltere Schwestern hatte, die ebenfalls Sopranistinnen waren, obwohl sie nicht so ber\u00fchmt waren wie sie.<\/p>\n

Nachdem sie zun\u00e4chst bei ihrer neun Jahre \u00e4lteren Schwester Eva studiert hatte, nahm sie anschlie\u00dfend Unterricht bei Evas Lehrer, Professor Ceccherini, am Instituto Musicale in Florenz.<\/p>\n

Wie im Leben so vieler ber\u00fchmter S\u00e4ngerinnen kam ihr gro\u00dfer Durchbruch mit ihrem Operndeb\u00fct im Jahr 1890, als sie im Alter von nur 19 Jahren die Rolle der Primadonna in Meyerbeers \u201eL\u2019Africaine\u201c am Teatro Paglione in Florenz einnahm. <\/p>\n

In ihrer Autobiografie \u201eMy Life in Song\u201c erinnert sie sich: \u201eDie B\u00fcrgersteige vom Theater zu meinem Haus waren selbst zu dieser sp\u00e4ten Stunde noch mit vielen Menschen ges\u00e4umt, und alle schienen mir Gl\u00fcckw\u00fcnsche zuzurufen.\u201c <\/p>\n

Nur zwei Monate sp\u00e4ter wurde sie engagiert, um die Rolle in Rom f\u00fcr den K\u00f6nig und die K\u00f6nigin von Italien zu wiederholen.<\/p>\n

Der Tenor Giacomo Lauri Volpi beschrieb sie als \u201eFrau mit einer schillernden Stimme, einem brillanten Timbre und einem Umfang und einer Beweglichkeit, die weit \u00fcber das Normale hinausgehen \u2026\u201c Ihre Stimme wurde als von \u201ewarmer, klarinettenartiger Sch\u00f6nheit\u201c beschrieben.<\/p>\n

Es wurde jedoch behauptet, dass ihre Mittelstimme eher d\u00fcnn und kindlich war (obwohl sie mit zunehmender Reife an W\u00e4rme zunahm). Dieser Aspekt ihrer Stimme gefiel einem anderen ber\u00fchmten Tenor, John McCormack, nicht, der sie mit \u201edem Wehklagen eines m\u00fcrrischen Kindes\u201c verglich. Sp\u00e4ter wurde geschrieben: \u201eTetrazzini besa\u00df eine au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnliche Gesangstechnik, die es ihr erm\u00f6glichte, jede stimmliche Herausforderung mit freudiger Leichtigkeit zu meistern. Sie beherrschte L\u00e4ufe, Triller, Staccati und Stimmverzierungen aller Art vollkommen.\u201c<\/p>\n

Sie etablierte sich in Lateinamerika und Europa, wo sie in St. Petersburg ihre Lieblingsrolle in Donizettis Lucia di Lammermoor mit Enrico Caruso sang. Dies war der Beginn einer engen Freundschaft und sp\u00e4ter sogar einer Zusammenarbeit bei einem Buch \u00fcber Gesangstechnik zwischen den beiden.<\/p>\n

Sie wurde zwanzig Mal vor den Vorhang gerufen und von EA Baugham in der Daily News mit Lob der Kritiker bedacht: \u201eIch glaube nicht, dass ich \u00fcbertreibe, wenn ich sage, dass Mme Tetrazzini die Stimme des Jahrhunderts hat und sich sogar von den gro\u00dfen italienischen S\u00e4ngerinnen, die wir kennen, abhebt \u2026\u201c<\/p>\n

Ihr Superstar-Status stand unmittelbar bevor, als Kritiker sie mit ihrem Idol Adelina Patti verglichen. Patti, die der fr\u00fcheren Operngeneration entstammte, besuchte eine Auff\u00fchrung und lud sie sp\u00e4ter zum Mittagessen ein. Die beiden Sopranistinnen wurden enge Freunde und Patti wurde oft dabei beobachtet, wie sie bei Tetrazzinis Auff\u00fchrungen laut klatschte. Ebenso schrieb Tetrazzini \u00fcber einen Brief, den sie von Patti erhalten hatte: \u201eLob von einem gemischten Publikum ist sehr erfreulich, nachdem man sein Bestes gegeben hat. Aber Lob, und solches Lob, von Patti ist weit mehr als die vor\u00fcbergehende Freude \u00fcber eine \u00f6ffentliche Ovation.\u201c<\/p>\n

Es folgten Engagements in Amerika und Plattenvertr\u00e4ge mit der Victor Recording Company hielten ihre Stimme zwischen 1904 und 1920 f\u00fcr die Nachwelt fest.<\/p>\n

Ein sehr ber\u00fchmtes Ereignis, f\u00fcr das sie bekannt ist, ist ihr Widerstand gegen Oscar Hammerstein, der sie an ihren Vertrag hielt, nicht in San Francisco zu singen. Hammerstein war ihr Agent, den sie f\u00fcr seinen Unternehmergeist und Gesch\u00e4ftssinn bewunderte. Sie rief aus: \u201eIch werde in San Francisco singen, und wenn ich dort auf der Stra\u00dfe singen muss, denn ich wei\u00df, dass die Stra\u00dfen von San Francisco frei sind.\u201c Mit dieser Erkl\u00e4rung gewann sie ihren Rechtsstreit und ihr neuer Agent WH Leahy verk\u00fcndete, dass sie auf den Stra\u00dfen von San Francisco singen w\u00fcrde. Und so bestieg Tetrazzini an einem klaren Weihnachtsabend im Jahr 1910 in einem strahlend wei\u00dfen Kleid eine B\u00fchnenplattform, umgeben von einer Menge von sch\u00e4tzungsweise zwei- bis dreihunderttausend Einwohnern von San Francisco, und brachte der Stadt, die sie liebte, ein St\u00e4ndchen. <\/p>\n

Neben diesem Vorgeschmack auf die Open-Air-Benefizauftritte des kommenden Megastars ist sie auch in der kulinarischen Welt in Erinnerung geblieben. Ob Truthahn oder Chicken Tetrazzini, das Gericht hat sich seinen Weg in die allgegenw\u00e4rtige Liste der Lieblingsgerichte erarbeitet.<\/p>\n

Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg widmete sie sich vor allem Konzerten und Rezitalen. Tetrazzini war dreimal verheiratet und in Rechtsstreitigkeiten mit ihrem dritten Ehemann verwickelt, die ihren enormen Reichtum schm\u00e4lerten. Dennoch war sie f\u00fcr ihre Gro\u00dfz\u00fcgigkeit bekannt.<\/p>\n
