data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Could any singer have ever received so many accolades, titles and fame in their lifetime? Maybe BENIAMINO GIGLI did\u2026<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John McCormack\u2019s life seemed charmed being interwoven with fame and fortune from its very beginning. Born in Westmeath, County Athlone in Ireland, his musical leanings were nurtured by singing in the church choir and no doubt also, by his Scottish parents who incidentally possessed fine singing voices.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later when the family moved to Dublin he joined the St. Mary\u2019s Pro Cathedral Choir. There his talent was recognised by the choir master and composer VINCENT O\u2019BRIEN.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One year after training he won the coveted medal Feis Ceoil for his singing.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/61E73615-7F0B-456A-A4FE-65DDDC843E2E#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> The following year he encouraged his friend, also a tenor who would later be famous in his own right, the author JAMES JOYCE, to enter the singing competition. Joyce, received 3rd place.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/61E73615-7F0B-456A-A4FE-65DDDC843E2E#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> One wonders what career path Joyce may have chosen had he won!<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fund raisers enabled him to train with Vincenzo Sabatini in Milan. Sabatini did not find his voice at all wanting and concentrated on teaching him a breathing technique which was to become a hallmark of McCormack\u2019s singing. Famous for his extraordinary breath control, he could sing sixty four notes on one breath in Mozart&#8217;s &#8220;Il mio tesoro&#8221; from <em>Don Giovanni<\/em>, and his singing of pieces by H\u00e4ndel was just as impressive in this remarkable ability.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He made his operatic debut under the name of Giovanni Foli in Mascagni\u2019s <em>L\u2019amico Fritz<\/em> in 1906. <a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/61E73615-7F0B-456A-A4FE-65DDDC843E2E#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> Engagements in America followed and at the height of his career he toured Australia as the star tenor for the Melba Grand Opera season of 1911. From 1908 to 1914 he performed regularly at Covent Garden with either NELLIE MELBA or LUISA TETRAZZINI.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/61E73615-7F0B-456A-A4FE-65DDDC843E2E#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1912 his interest turned more and more in the direction of concert performances which brought his voice to the masses &#8211; and the masses adored him.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He became the Victor Talking Machine Company\u2019s most popular \u2018Red Seal\u2019 recording artist after ENRICO CARUSO. Apropos Caruso, after hearing Caruso\u2019s performance in the front row as Rodolfo in La Boheme at Covent Garden, McCormack said: &#8220;It was the best lesson, up to that moment, I had ever received and a stimulus which cannot be described. The sound of Caruso&#8217;s voice that night lingered in my ears for months.&#8221;<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/61E73615-7F0B-456A-A4FE-65DDDC843E2E#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or from another account, \u201cas to this schooling he was prompted by hearing a Caruso at Covent Garden in 1904. McCormack was twenty then, and just beginning a career as a professional singer. \u2018I will never rest\u2019 he said to a friend after that performance.I will work and train and pray and someday there will be two men singing like that. Caruso and me.\u201d<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/61E73615-7F0B-456A-A4FE-65DDDC843E2E#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two years later he was singing in London himself, becoming the Covent Garden\u2019s youngest leading tenor in Mascagni\u2019s <em>Cavalleria Rusticana<\/em>.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He continued to receive praise as his unstoppable star ascended. The famous violinist, JAN KUBELIK, remarked in paying him one of the greatest compliments after hearing him in Prague: &#8220;That man must have a Stradivarius in his throat\u201d.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/61E73615-7F0B-456A-A4FE-65DDDC843E2E#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possibly because he didn\u2019t quite enjoy the acting side of performing opera, or that he realised he could reach more people and make more money from his voice whilst performing with the likes of Fritz Kreisler, he decided to pursue concert performing and the popular music recording artist path. During the catastrophe of the First World War, in 1917, he also decided to become an American citizen. McCormack\u2019s biographer, Gordon Ledbetter, believes the tenor was the last singer to successfully bring together such divergent styles. <a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/61E73615-7F0B-456A-A4FE-65DDDC843E2E#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another biographer attempting to convey McCormack&#8217;s widespread fan base to contemporary audiences said he was like PAVAROTTI, MADONNA and JOHNNY CARSON all rolled into one!<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/61E73615-7F0B-456A-A4FE-65DDDC843E2E#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certainly his wartime hits appealed greatly to the Irish population in America as they could show pride in both Ireland and the United States. McCormack became a radio megastar and donated to the U.S war effort and catholic charities generously.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/61E73615-7F0B-456A-A4FE-65DDDC843E2E#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of his hits at the time were \u2018I<em>t\u2019s a Long Way to Tipperary<\/em>\u2019 \u2018<em>Mother MacCree<\/em>\u2019 and for the Hollywood film \u2018<em>Song o\u2019My Heart<\/em>\u2019 where he was paid half a million dollars to sing eleven songs for the soundtrack.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He became a very wealthy man and by all accounts enjoyed his wealth to the fullest, giving back to the public in the form of many benefit concerts and donations.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/61E73615-7F0B-456A-A4FE-65DDDC843E2E#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not many opera singers are created Papal Counts &#8211; not so for John Count McCormack as seen engraved on his headstone where he is buried in his birth country of Ireland. Earlier in his life he had also received three Papal Knighthoods in addition to being a Knight of Malta. He died at the age of 61 of bronchial pneumonia seven years after giving his farewell performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Despite the farewell performance in 1938, during the Second World War, he came out of retirement in support of the Red Cross<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/61E73615-7F0B-456A-A4FE-65DDDC843E2E#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a>. Vielleicht war es Beniamino Gigli \u2026<\/p>\n<p>John McCormacks Leben war von Anfang an von Ruhm und Reichtum gepr\u00e4gt. Geboren wurde er in Westmeath, County Athlone in Irland. Seine musikalischen Neigungen wurden durch das Singen im Kirchenchor und zweifellos auch durch seine schottischen Eltern gef\u00f6rdert, die \u00fcbrigens \u00fcber hervorragende Gesangsstimmen verf\u00fcgten. <\/p>\n<p>Sp\u00e4ter, als die Familie nach Dublin zog, trat er dem Chor der St. Mary&#039;s Pro Cathedral bei. Dort wurde sein Talent vom Chorleiter und Komponisten Vincent O&#039;Brien erkannt. <\/p>\n<p>Ein Jahr nach seiner Ausbildung gewann er f\u00fcr seinen Gesang die begehrte Medaille Feis Ceoil. Im folgenden Jahr ermutigte er seinen Freund, ebenfalls Tenor und sp\u00e4ter selbst ber\u00fchmt geworden, den Autor James Joyce, am Gesangswettbewerb teilzunehmen. Joyce belegte den 3. Platz. Man fragt sich, welchen Karriereweg Joyce wohl eingeschlagen h\u00e4tte, wenn er gewonnen h\u00e4tte!<\/p>\n<p>Spendenaktionen erm\u00f6glichten ihm eine Ausbildung bei Vincenzo Sabatini in Mailand. Sabatini fand seine Stimme \u00fcberhaupt nicht mangelhaft und konzentrierte sich darauf, ihm eine Atemtechnik beizubringen, die zu einem Markenzeichen von McCormacks Gesang werden sollte. Ber\u00fchmt f\u00fcr seine au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnliche Atemkontrolle, konnte er in Mozarts \u201eIl mio tesoro\u201c aus Don Giovanni 64 Noten mit einem Atemzug singen, und sein Gesang von St\u00fccken von H\u00e4ndel war in dieser bemerkenswerten F\u00e4higkeit ebenso beeindruckend.<\/p>\n<p>Sein Operndeb\u00fct gab er 1906 unter dem Namen Giovanni Foli in Mascagnis L&#039;amico Fritz. Es folgten Engagements in Amerika und auf dem H\u00f6hepunkt seiner Karriere tourte er als Startenor f\u00fcr die Saison der Melba Grand Opera 1911 durch Australien. Von 1908 bis 1914 trat er regelm\u00e4\u00dfig in Covent Garden mit NELLIE MELBA oder LUISA TETRAZZINI auf.<\/p>\n<p>Ab 1912 richtete sich sein Interesse immer mehr auf konzertante Auftritte, bei denen er seine Stimme den Massen n\u00e4herbrachte \u2013 und die Massen verehrten ihn.<\/p>\n<p>Nach Enrico Caruso wurde er der beliebteste \u201eRed Seal\u201c-K\u00fcnstler der Victor Talking Machine Company. Apropos Caruso: Nachdem er Carusos Auftritt als Rodolfo in La Boh\u00e8me in der ersten Reihe im Covent Garden geh\u00f6rt hatte, sagte McCormack: \u201eDas war die beste Lektion, die ich bis dahin je erhalten hatte, und ein unbeschreiblicher Ansporn. McCormack war damals zwanzig und stand am Anfang seiner Karriere als professioneller S\u00e4nger. \u201aIch werde nie ruhen\u2018, sagte er nach diesem Auftritt zu einem Freund. Ich werde arbeiten und trainieren und beten, und eines Tages werden zwei M\u00e4nner so singen. Caruso und ich.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Zwei Jahre sp\u00e4ter sang er selbst in London und wurde der j\u00fcngste f\u00fchrende Tenor des Covent Garden in Mascagnis Cavalleria Rusticana.<\/p>\n<p>Er erhielt weiterhin Lob, w\u00e4hrend sein Stern unaufhaltsam aufstieg. Der ber\u00fchmte Geiger Jan Kubelik machte ihm eines der gr\u00f6\u00dften Komplimente, nachdem er ihn in Prag geh\u00f6rt hatte: \u201eDieser Mann muss eine Stradivari im Hals haben.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Vielleicht, weil ihm die schauspielerische Seite der Opernauff\u00fchrung nicht so gefiel, oder weil er erkannte, dass er mit seiner Stimme mehr Menschen erreichen und mehr Geld verdienen konnte, wenn er mit Leuten wie Fritz Kreisler auftrat, entschied er sich f\u00fcr Konzertauftritte und die Karriere als Popmusiker. W\u00e4hrend der Katastrophe des Ersten Weltkriegs im Jahr 1917 beschloss er au\u00dferdem, amerikanischer Staatsb\u00fcrger zu werden. McCormacks Biograf Gordon Ledbetter glaubt, dass der Tenor der letzte S\u00e4nger war, der so unterschiedliche Stile erfolgreich zusammenbrachte. <\/p>\n<p>Ein anderer Biograf, der versuchte, dem zeitgen\u00f6ssischen Publikum McCormacks gro\u00dfe Fangemeinde zu vermitteln, sagte, er sei wie Pavarotti, Madonna und Johnny Carson in einer Person!<\/p>\n<p>Seine Hits aus Kriegszeiten fanden bei der irischen Bev\u00f6lkerung in Amerika gro\u00dfen Anklang, da sie sowohl auf Irland als auch auf die Vereinigten Staaten stolz sein konnten. McCormack wurde ein Radio-Megastar und spendete gro\u00dfz\u00fcgig f\u00fcr die US-Kriegsanstrengungen und katholische Wohlt\u00e4tigkeitsorganisationen.<\/p>\n<p>Zu seinen Hits aus dieser Zeit z\u00e4hlten unter anderem \u201eIt\u2019s a Long Way to Tipperary\u201c, \u201eMother MacCree\u201c und der Hollywoodfilm \u201eSong o\u2019My Heart\u201c, f\u00fcr den er eine halbe Million Dollar daf\u00fcr bekam, elf Lieder f\u00fcr den Soundtrack zu singen.<\/p>\n<p>Er wurde ein sehr reicher Mann und allen Berichten zufolge genoss er seinen Reichtum in vollen Z\u00fcgen und gab der \u00d6ffentlichkeit in Form zahlreicher Benefizkonzerte und Spenden etwas zur\u00fcck.<\/p>\n<p>Nicht viele Operns\u00e4nger werden zu p\u00e4pstlichen Grafen \u2013 nicht so John Count McCormack, wie auf seinem Grabstein in seinem Geburtsland Irland eingraviert ist. Fr\u00fcher in seinem Leben wurde er zus\u00e4tzlich zum Malteserritter dreimal zum p\u00e4pstlichen Ritter ernannt. Er starb im Alter von 61 Jahren an einer Lungenentz\u00fcndung, sieben Jahre nach seinem Abschiedskonzert in der Royal Albert Hall.
