Mimmo Matania is the co-founder of Napulitanata, a group of musicians dedicated to researching and performing traditional Neapolitan music and songs.
Mimmo is a passionate accordion player, being introduced to the instrument when as a child he had a toy accordion. What makes the accordion so special for Mimmo is its capacity for transforming the sweet melody of traditional music into complex sounds. Mimmo has a vocation both as a performer and manager. He has degrees in the administration of artistic and cultural heritage, with a particular emphasis on regional music. With the aid of a scholarship he has researched extensively the historical repertoire of Neapolitan music and song and as a performer with the accordion has brought this to life.
With Napulitanata he has been able to draw on both his skills, as manager of the cultural patrimony of Naples and as musician. Through his friendship with percussionist Fabio Esposito he performs with Agora Arte and with pianist Pasquale Cirillo, singer Manuela Reno and double bass player Giuseppe Arena. Working with Pasquale Cirillo became the seed that sprouted into Napulitanata.
Mimmo is the host at the performances at Napulitanata’s hall in the historic centre of Naples, where he aims to create a welcoming and friendly, participatory atmosphere with his audience who are treated as guests. But he then takes up his accordion and drops the administrators mask and becomes a humble accordion player, part of a team of fine professional musicians.
