Dame Eva Turner

Remembering today the legendary British dramatic soprano, described by Arturo Toscanini as “a beautiful voice, beautiful pronunciation and beautiful appearance.” (1) Dame Eva Turner sang the dramatic Italian soprano repertoire as well as the Wagnerian heroines to great acclaim. Today she is most closely identified with her portrayal of the Princess Turandot where she was defined as being incomparable in the role. When listening to her recording as Turandot, it’s truly astounding and if I may dare say it, unrivalled to this day – having had the pleasure of hearing many outstanding interpretations. Her bright, gleaming, effortless voice soars out in an almost supernatural way… which may reflect the product of a technique not so common in today’s world. And of course, a naturally strong Lancashire belle played its role in producing this majestic vocal performance. Later becoming a teacher, giving her singing legacy to many fine opera singers who followed in her vocal footsteps.

Dame Eva was given fellowships and honorary membership to the most prestigious music colleges and schools in the United Kingdom and in 1962 she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Recordings of Dame Eva can be found on YouTube to enjoy and admire.
