EPISODE NUMBER ONE OF OUR MONTHLY VODCAST THE VOICE DETECTIVE SHOW WITH LIANE KEEGAN

AUSTRALIAN DRAMATIC CONTRALTO

LIANE KEEGAN

Born in Australia, Liane’s voice and aptitude to sing was recognised at an early age receiving scholarships from the Opera Foundation Australia and the Shell Royal Covent Garden Scholarship which enabled her to study at the National Opera Studio London. In 1997 she also recipient of the Bayreuth Bursary from the Wagner Society of Great Britain.

Liane came to the attention of both critics and public alike with roles including Azucena Il Trovatore for Opera of South Australia, Ulrica Un Ballo in Maschera for Opera Australia conducted by Simone Young, Mistress Quickly in the Minnesota Sommerfest production of Falstaff conducted by Sir Jeffrey Tate and first Norn in The Twilight of the Gods for English National Opera.

Liane became an ensemble member of Theater Hagen and the Deutsche Opera Berlin where she sang amongst many roles including Klytemnestra Elektra, Marcellina Le Nozze di Figaro, First Norn Der Ring des Nibelungen, Anna The Trojans and the Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte.

Her concert repertoire is numerous and included Mozart Requiem with Sir Neville Mariner, Waltraute Die Walküre with Sir Anthony Pappano at the Edinburgh Festival as well as extensive Lied and Oratorio appearances.

Liane appeared as Erda, First Norn and Waltraute in the 2004 Melba Records recording of the first Australian Ring Cycle conducted by Asher Fisch.

More recently Liane has appeared as Heriodias Salome for Victoria Opera and Erda in the Brisbane Ring Cycle in 2023 as well as being the German language coach for the complete production.

Her acclaimed foray into popular music in her one woman show The Judy Garland Songbook wowed audiences with her belt voice and uncanny interpretation of the great singer’s life, showing that the two different paths of singing classical and popular have one thing in common – a great technique.

In amongst her busy schedule Liane’s has found time to run her own vocal studio and devote time to training choirs as well as producing and directing opera productions.

This is someone who knows her stuff! Enjoy my interview with Liane – contralto, recitalist, teacher, language coach, producer and artist.
